Opportunity Area - Covid educational crisis

Due to the COVID Crisis, India's edtech boom seemed unstoppable. The country had emerged decisively as the world's second-largest edtech market after the United States (US). Edtech was also India's most heavily funded startup segment, receiving an influx of US$ 4.73 billion in 2021 alone.

Prototyping to sell

AR sketching

One of our ideas finally landed. I then proceeded to build out the initial design for an AR portal to supplant science lessons. For the MVP, we created a re-visitable greenhouse where users have to log in everyday and grow fern plants.

I started by designing the 3D artifacts. Initially, I created pencil sketches and then transferred them to Blender. Subsequently, I transferred the assets (portal, plants, cosmetics, etc.) to Unity 3D.

Development

The development process spanned approximately eight months. The team focused on integrating the back end and front end in Unity 3D using AR Foundation. We crafted player loops and game design flows, leveraging the robust and well-tested architecture for 3D game design.

Validation Study

I did usability studies with 12 students. I divided them into 2 groups, "Control Group" that learnt about ferns through a slide deck; and "Focus Group" that learnt about ferns through our app. I designed a subject matter test and evaluated their scores, thoughts, and feelings.

Control group scored 36% less on the subject related test. This can be attributed to difficulty in remembering technical details and time-sensitive memory.

Focus Group showed more positive emotions exciting and inspiring to learn more about gardening.
